For those using Lightroom 5 & 6 and interested in GPS metadata, version 5 introduced a new field called “Direction”. This only shows in the Map module by default but can be made to display in the Library module:
The new EXIF tag is GPSImgDirection and you can get instructions on how to display it in the Library module in my previous post about customising Lightroom field names.
Checking support for Direction information
The field will only be displayed if your GPS device supports compass direction – not all do. I use the Aokatec external GPS unit on my Nikon SLR and this does embed the compass data. To check, choose a photo in Lightroom’s Library module, grid view, that has GPS info embedded (it will have a little signpost icon in the bottom right of the thumbnail)
then go to the Map module. If the GPS coordinates are displayed but not the direction, you do not have direction info embedded.
